Executive Director - Major Appliance Recycling Roundtable (MARR)
Location: Victoria or Vancouver, BC
The Major Appliance Recycling Roundtable (MARR) is a not-for-profit stewardship agency created to implement and operate a stewardship plan for end-of-life (EOL) major household appliances in the province of British Columbia (BC) on behalf of the major appliance manufacturers, brand owners, importers and first sellers in BC, and who are obligated under the BC Recycling Regulation. The MARR stewardship plan received the approval of BC's Ministry of Environment on June 29, 2012, and has been operating since the Fall of 2013. Today it is the only approved stewardship plan for major appliances in the province.
MARR is working towards enhancing the performance and transparency of the existing market-based system of collecting and recycling major household appliances in BC. Updated stewardship plans are submitted to the Ministry of Environment approximately every five years and it is expected that MARR’s next plan will put a finer point on the responsibilities and costs involved in meeting its obligations.
MARR seeks an Executive Director who will work closely with stakeholders to lead all aspects of MARR’s program to ensure that the program fulfills its obligations under the BC Recycling Regulation. Reporting to the Board of Directors, this individual will be comfortable with both the strategic and the tactical as they work to scale the organization thoughtfully over time.
The ideal candidate brings leadership experience from within an industry in which logistics, multiple locations, transportation and extensive stakeholder relations is in evidence. Regardless of where this experience has been gained, this individual is analytical and future-oriented, a consummate relationships builder, and is excited by the prospect of bettering British Columbia’s environment through leading edge, responsible product stewardship while enabling industry to meet their regulated obligations in a cost-effective manner.
The nature of the role requires considerable time out of the office in terms of working with the multitude of stakeholders. The ideal candidate, given proximity to stakeholders, is likely to be based in Vancouver or Victoria.

Environmental Sustainability Specialist, City of North Vancouver
The Engineering, Parks & Environment Department requires a temporary full-time Environmental Sustainability Specialist, for a term of approximately 1 year.
With your proven commitment to sustainability, you will be involved in advancing the City’s waste reduction, recycling, and climate protection initiatives. This is a dynamic advisory and technical position working as a member of the City’s Environmental Sustainability team. You will coordinate waste reduction and recycling programs, assist in the development of environmental policies; conduct best practices research and feasibility studies; and design, implement and evaluate programs. You will provide technical expertise, advice, and guidance on environmental matters, including regulatory and other requirements of senior governments or affiliated agencies. You will coordinate community engagement activities designed to raise awareness and effect behavioural change. You will develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with community stewardship groups, nonprofit agencies, other municipalities, government departments and agencies, developers and the wider City of North Vancouver community.
You will have completed graduate or undergraduate studies in environmental science, business, or engineering, with courses in environmental science or related subjects, together with sound related experience in the environmental management field. Alternatively, you will have an equivalent combination of training and experience. Knowledge of waste reduction and recycling, community based social marketing, energy conservation and climate action programs, and other environmental issues relating to the work to be performed is required, along with a thorough knowledge of research and analysis techniques in environmental science.
Excellent interpersonal skills are necessary to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external contacts. Demonstrated project management skills would be an asset. Strong analytical abilities and excellent knowledge of spreadsheets are required, together with superb oral and written communication skills and the ability to work independently. You will also have a valid Class 5 BC Drivers’ license. Some evening/weekend work may be required.
For temporary full-time positions of eight (8) months or longer, a City employee who is successful on the posting will have the right to revert to their former position.
$ 34.01 to $40.16 per hour
(Pay Grade 24 – January 2015 rates)
Hours of Work:
The City of North Vancouver currently works on a compressed work schedule of 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday, with one scheduled day off (Monday or Friday) approximately each three-week scheduling cycle.
