Fridges and freezers contain Freon, a gas that can destroy the ozone layer if released into the atmosphere. To capture this gas from old fridges and freezers, these appliances need to be taken to a facility that is licensed to remove it.
Non-working fridges and freezers may be dropped off at a local facility or picked up by a private disposal or recycling company. Phone the RCBC Recycling Hotline for the available options in your community.
Fridges that are between 10 to 24 cubic feet, in working order, are picked up free of charge by BC Hydro from their customers in BC. See their "Fridge Buy-Back Program" for more details.
Need to recycle your old fridge or freezer? Find a drop-off near you on the RCBC Recyclepedia.
