Fridges and freezers use Freon as a refrigerant. Freon has been identified as an ozone-depleting substance and must be drained from refrigeration units by a trained technician at a licensed facility.
Many local landfills and transfer stations are equipped to recycle fridges and freezers. The units can also be picked up by private disposal or recycling companies. A handful of municipalities in B.C. offer free pick-up of fridges and freezers. Contact the RCBC Recycling Hotline for options available in your community.
Don't forget to check out the BC Hydro "Fridge Buy-Back Program." If you are a residential customer of BC Hydro and you have a working fridge between 10 and 24 cubic feet, BC Hydro will pick it up and recycle it for free! You can find more information on the program on the BC Hydro website.
