What happens to the fluorescent bulbs I drop off at LightRecycle depots?

Fluorescent lights collected at LightRecycle depots are shipped to domestic processors. The processor crushes the light bulbs under controlled conditions and the components are separated. The glass and metal are recycled and the mercury-phosphor material is sent for retorting (a heating process that results in usable mercury). The destination for plastics and ceramics from CFL ballasts may vary by processor.
