Workshop/Webcast on Tuesday, February 14, 2012 - Phase 1 Packaging and Printed Paper Program Development: Current System and Options Development                      

Dear Member:

Multi-Material British Columbia (MMBC) is hosting a workshop, with simultaneous webcast, to present information compiled during Phase 1 of MMBC’s activities to develop a stewardship program for residential packaging and printed paper in British Columbia. 

Who Should Attend

The workshop/webcast is of importance to all stakeholders with an interest in the future stewardship program for residential packaging and printed papers including:

• producers of packaging and printed paper supplied to residential customers in British Columbia;
• local governments;
• private businesses providing collection, processing and/or marketing of residential packaging and printed paper;
• not-for-profit organizations providing collection, processing and/or marketing of residential packaging and printed paper;
• environmental and other non-government organizations with an interest in recycling programs for packaging and printed paper; and
• members of the public with an interest in recycling programs for packaging and printed paper.

How to Participate in Webcast

Joining by webcast enables you to participate fully in the workshop including posing questions and listening to the discussion, while avoiding the travel required to attend in person. 

To join by webcast, you need a computer with speakers and an internet connection (high speed is preferred but dial up can also work). During the workshop, you will watch the slides on your computer screen and hear the commentary through your computer’s speakers. Headphones or external speakers will enhance the sound if participating using a laptop computer.  You will not use a telephone to listen to the presentation and discussion.

You will be asked to sign in to the webcast.  You will view the webcast using a media player (Windows Media or Silverlight) rather than downloading the slides.  You can submit questions and comments at any time through the webcast question system, which forwards your question or comment privately to our webcast team. The presenters will read and answer your question during the scheduled question and answer segments of the agenda.

You will be able to use the following browsers:
• Internet Explorer (for PC users)
• Firefox or Google Chrome (for MAC users).

We will send a link to the webcast and login information on Monday, February 13, 2012.

Registration

Once you have decided whether you will attend in person or by webcast, please register to attend the workshop in person or online by webcast.  You will be asked to indicate your method of participation – in person or by webcast during the registration process.

Registration and workshop attendance is complimentary.  Pre-registration deadline is Friday, February 10, 2012.  

Consultation Documents

Two reports will be posted on the websites of Recycling Council of British Columbia and BCStewards.com prior to the workshop for stakeholder review.  These reports are:

• Current System for Managing Residential Packaging and Printed Paper in British Columbia which presents information compiled during a recent data gathering process on the current collection and recycling system operating in BC; and
• Packaging and Printed Paper Stewardship Program Design Options which presents information on a range of possible program design options for the stewardship packaging and printed paper program. 

An email will be distributed to those receiving this email and those who have registered for the workshop or webcast when these documents are posted.

Consultation Period

Stakeholders are welcome to submit written comments for a period of two weeks following the workshop, to February 28, 2012.

Background

MMBC is a not-for-profit agency established under the British Columbia Society Act formed in anticipation of the requirement to develop, submit and implement a stewardship plan for packaging and printed paper. MMBC’s intention is to assume the role of a stewardship agency in order to discharge the obligations of PPP producers (brand owners and first sellers) under Schedule 5 of the Recycling Regulation.  To view Schedule 5 of the Recycling Regulation, click here.
