Tip of the Day - 2 - Waste-Free Meals

 RCBC Tip od the Day
Waste Free Meals

Eating produces a lot of waste. There's packaging, take-out containers, disposable napkins and cutlery, plastic-wrap, and of course food scraps. Because meals usually produce a lot of waste, they also present a great opportunity to reduce waste! Organize a "Waste-Free Lunch" at your work or school. Even if it's just one day it will inform people about how they can change their habits and get them thinking about the waste they produce.

  • To avoid un-recyclable Styrofoam containers when you get take-away for lunch, keep a Tupperware container at work.
  • Carry a reusable coffee mug or water bottle to avoid disposable cups and bottles.
  • Keep your kitchen at home and work full of glasses, mugs and cutlery so no one needs to use disposables.
  • Pack your lunch in a reusable cloth bag.
  • Avoid single-serving products like yogurt and juice boxes. Instead purchase larger sizes and take them for lunch in reusable containers.
  • If you go out for lunch, eat in rather than getting take-out.
  • It has been estimated that on average, a school-age child using a disposable lunch generates 30 kilograms of waste per school year.
