Tip of the Day - 5 - Green Halloween

Treat Bags

• Buy or make trick or treat bags that can be reused every year. You could use an old pillow case or a plain reusablshopping bag, some fabric paint, maybe some themed stencils, googly eyes, glue and fabric cut-outs.

Treats

• Rather than going out trick-or-treating, have a Halloween party with homemade treats. That will mean less packaging waste and treats that are healthier for kids than candy. Don't forget to use e-vites to save paper!

• If you are handing out candy, pick organic treats like lollipops, chocolate or dried fruit. You can hand out reusable gifts like crayons or colouring books. Also look for products that use less packaging or eco-friendly packaging.

Costumes

• The most environmentally friendly costume is one made from second-hand clothes. Look around your house or check out local thrift stores for old sheets, wedding or prom dresses. Maybe organize a costume swap with friends or with your kid's school.

• Skip the chemical-laden face paint this year and make your own. Mix equal parts of cornstarch and glycerin (available at pharmacies and some grocery stores) and add a few drops of food colouring. To make fake blood mix light corn syrup with a little hot water and liquid dish soap, red and blue food colouring and a little milk, but be careful - this mixture can stain clothes.

Pumpkins

• Save your seeds when carving your pumpkin to roast for a yummy treat, and don't forget to go organic! After Halloween compost your pumpkin. If you don't have a composter, give it to a composting neighbour or check call the Recycling Hotline to see if your city is collecting them with your yard waste.

• You can also cook your pumpkin - they make great soups or try a pumpkin cheesecake!
